EDITOR'S REVIEW
OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is
The Survive The Quake Engineering Kit, from Lakeshore Learning is intended for children ages 4 and up, and comes with 30 Building Blocks in 5 different sizes, an Earthquake Simulator, and an Activity Book.

Survive the Quake is fun to play with, but perhaps more important is the educational value of this engineering kit.  Survive the Quake provides basic background information about earthquakes, and the challenges engineers have in maintaining building infrastructure and the occupants' safety.

Once you've read through the background and information, it's time to build and see what will withstand different levels of quakes. The instruction booklet illustrates different structures to build, and various earthquake levels to test how strong these buildings are. The blocks stack easily and there is a dial on the Earthquake Simulator, marked with levels 1 through 5. Once you build your mini-city, turn the dial. The higher the number, the more devastating the earthquake is.

Is It Fun?
Although an actual earthquake is the opposite of fun, the Survive The Quake Engineering Kit combines fun with education. Stacking the buildings, setting the simulator levels and watching things fall is a lot of fun.  But more importantly, there is much to be learned here when it comes to earthquakes and the challenges engineers face.
Who It’s For
Children ages 4+ or anyone interested in learning more earthquakes or engineering.
What To Be Aware Of
There is not a lot of possibility for repeat play.  Once you have seen the buildings fall a few times, children might be tempted to see what happens to other items once they have been shaken up by the simulator.
