OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

Artsplash 3D Liquid Art is the winning toy from ABC’s The Toy Box.  After eight episodes, and over 35 toy inventions, the kid judges have spoken, and declared Artsplash the winner. It's a cool, art activity set that lets kids ages 5 and up create colorful, 3D art with water. It comes with one design station, three colored dyes, which can be mixed to create endless amounts of colors, three dye containers, six art sheet designs including a robot, a fish, flowers, and more, and two Aquapens. All you need from home is water, and paper towels to absorb any spills. Fun and easy to use, simply mix the color dyes with water, and then keep as is or mix with other colors to create different combinations in the color mixing reservoirs found on the design station. Next choose an art sheet, and place it on the closed lid on the design station. Each artsheet has special segments that react with water to make a design. To start creating, fill the Aquapen with the first color of your choice, and gently squeeze the colored water onto the segments you want to color. Then choose the next color, and so on. We found the process easy to do, as well as relaxing. It also seems like a great way to work on hand eye coordination, and fine motor skills. If a color squirts or falls onto a part of the artsheet it shouldn't, or if you made a mistake, simply use a paper towel to soak up the error. Once the design is complete, kids are encouraged to take a picture of it or have their parents take the picture, and share wth their friends using the hashtag #Artsplash. This toy is easy to clean up, and offers a lot of repeat play. Simply dump the water into the sides of the design station, wipe the Artsheet clean, and decorate it again. When your art session is over, simply dump the unused water down the drain, and use a paper towel to dry the pieces. The design station holds most of the pieces to store together, and put way for next time. Artsplash is available from Mattel exclusively at Toys R Us stores and at toysrus.com.

Is It Fun?

Artsplash 3D Liquid Art is a fun, art activity kit unlike anything on the market. All you need to add is water, and you can design one of six designs at a time, and play over and over again. Three colored dyes are included, which are mixed with water, and then can be mixed with one another to create endless color combinations. The artsheets feature segments for coloring with the colored water, and they're designed so that the water stays within the segments, allowing kids to color in the lines every time. If water spreads outside the segment or if a child makes a mistake, simply use a paper towel to soak it up in a couple of seconds. It's magical to watch. The design process is easy enough to do, and we found it relaxing. It also offers a fun way to work on hand eye coordination, and fine motor skills. Once an artsheet has been completed, it can be saved digitally by taking a picture of it, and shared with friends. Parents may appreciate that their children can get creative without adding another piece of paper artwork to their collection.

One of our favorite parts about this toy is how easy it is to clean up. Aside from some potential water spills, it is virtually mess free. Just be careful when handling the dye as to not get it directly on skin or clothing. When done playing, simply dump the unused water in the sink, and dry the pieces with a paper towel.
