Use the crayons to color in the pages to your liking , then scan them into the app. One you’ve scanned your superhero character into the app, she will appear through the lens of your smartphone as if superimposed on the real world. You can pinch the character to resize it or move it around the screen. You can also give the character a customized background, add animated color effects, and take selfies with the characters.
We like that this coloring kit gives kids a bit of hands-on tactile play as well as interactive digital play, so it is interacting with today’s kids where they play. Plus, it’s pretty cool and exciting for young kids to see their creations come to life digitally through the app.
The only really criticism we have was surprisingly with the crayons. While we often feel Crayola crayons are some of the best to work with, we wish this kits came with more vibrant colors. Especially when appearing on the digital screen, the characters end up appearing pretty dull and muted, and that’s after a few coats of crayon. And for a kit like DC Super Hero Girls, it would have been nice to have crayons colors that actually matched the characters' typical color schemes. For example, so many of the characters have some kind of black component to their outfits and hair, so it would have been nice to have a black crayon to work with as opposed to grey, which isn’t really used anywhere and requires color mixing to achieve some characters looks. Perhaps this has something to do with the AR tech, but even the other colors we felt weren’t vibrant enough for coloring superheroes.
If you do have other Crayons lying around the house, you can use them to add more detail and vibrancy to your pictures. This is something we ended up doing and highly suggest if you are fans of more bright and vibrant images.
Additional Crayola Color Alive 2.0 coloring kits are available and sold separately, including the Zombie color book also featured in this review.
The updated Color Alive 2.0 app only works with the new Color Alive 2.0 coloring books. You’ll still need to download the original app for any Color Alive 1.0 coloring books.
The new app and coloring books offer kids the chance to have more than 1 character interacting together on the screen along with new sound effects and color effects.
