What It Is
The LEGO Creator Carousel, model number 10257 is, in a word, a masterpiece. The follow up to last year's Ferris Wheel, this is a 2,670-piece set that's designed for expert builders. It took our in-house expert about 4 hours to assemble. This is a classic platform carousel, which has been a staple at fairs and amusement parks since the middle of the 19th Century. It features four animals that go up and down--a frog, tiger, elephant and flamingo--and a stationary swan boat, all of which go together fairly easily, thanks to the super clear instructions.
The level of detailing on the finished model is truly remarkable and it looks like one of the classic Victorian creations with mirrored surfaces and a large central platform. And this isn't just a static model: part of the assembly is to put together the mechanics, and with a turn of the crank, you can set the whole model in motion. All that's missing is the calliope music!
Is It Fun?
For fans of detailed LEGO sets, this is a blast. The level of detail and the really creative design of some of the new pieces will intrigue and entertain builders. They'll enjoy seeing this classic model come together. And then there's the fun of making it go round and round.
Who It’s For
This is designed for expert builders ages 16 and up, but younger kids can do it with an adult. It's going to be appeal to people who love carousels, of course, but it also makes a great display piece, as we've noted above.
What To Be Aware Of
For an experienced LEGO builder, the going can get a little bit tedious, as building the 12 pieces that create the top is a bit repetitive, but stick with it because, wow, is it worth it! This is a wonderful model for real LEGO enthusiasts, and it's gorgeous enough that you'll want to keep it on display all the time.
We've ranked this for collectibility because we really think that once this is put together, it's not going to be taken apart. Rather, it's a real piece of decor.
As always with LEGO, the instructions are super clear and easy to follow.
