OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

In Apples to Apples Kids 7+ from Mattel, the award-winning game of funny comparisons has been designed for younger players with kid-friendly content, and words that are appropriate for beginning readers. Game play is similar to the original with two types of cards: Red Apple, which contain nouns, and Green Apple, which contain adjectives. Nouns include Playgrounds, a fairy, monster trucks, and The Little Mermaid, while some of the adjectives are shiny, useful, tiny, and stinky. Each of the 4-10 players is dealt five Red Apple cards, and must select the one from his or her hand that he or she feels is most like the adjective on the Green Apple card played by the judge. Definitions are listed on each card, which may be helpful to kids and offers a fun way to practice vocabulary. Players then hand their selected cards to the judge face down, and he or she reads all the answers aloud. Players can then try to convince the judge why a card should be declared the winner. The judge chooses the winner of that round however he or she sees fit, whether it’s the funniest, the most literal, or the most creative. The winner of each round wins the green apple card, and the first player with four green apple cards wins the game. The role of judge passes to the player on the left each round so every player will most likely get a chance to be the judge. With 288 cards, this game can be played over and over again with new combinations, and results each time.

This version of the popular game loved by so many features kid-friendly content, and words that are appropriate for beginning readers. Game play is similar to the original, and easy to pick up. With definitions or descriptions listed on each card, it is a fun way for kids to learn new words. With 288 cards, there is a lot of opportunity for repeat play as the game can be played again and again with new combinations, and results each time. It offers kids a fun way to get to know one another better, and is sure to bring a lot of laughter.

Who It’s For

Apples to Apples Kids 7+ is for 4-10 players ages 7 years old and up. It would be fun to play with a group of friends or at a family game night.

What To Be Aware Of

Game play is similar to the original Apples to Apples except after players submit their Red Cards to the judge anonymously, players can try to convince the judge why a card should be declared the winner. Players can choose to omit this rule from the game, sticking with the original anonymous answers. The game is subjective in that each round, the judge chooses the winner however he or she sees fit, whether it’s the funniest, the most literal, or the most creative. The winner of each round wins the green apple card, and the first player with four green apple cards wins the game. The role of judge passes to the player on the left each round so all players will most likely get the chance to be the judge.
