Project MC2 McKeyla's Lava Lip Gloss Review (MGA Entertainment)

Project MC2 McKeyla's Lava Lip Gloss
What It Is

Give your lips some love with Project MC2 McKeyla's Lava Lip Gloss, a make-your-own lip gloss kit based on the Netflix series Project MC2. This is a doll and experiment kit, so it comes with a fashion doll wearing a gorgeous sequined gown like the one worn by McKeyla on the show. The doll's gown features nude mesh cut-outs on the side, and it is accessorized with platform shoes that have translucent heels, a silvery jacket, and dangly earrings. The doll also wears a purple purse with chain strap that really opens.

For the experiment portion of the kit, kids get a light-up lip gloss tube and a pipette. You'll need to provide two types of oils and food coloring or a flavored, colored beverage.

All you do is fill the lip gloss tube halfway with one type of oil, then fill it the rest of the way with a second type of oil and add two drops of food coloring. When you turn the tube from side to side, you'll watch the “lava” bubbles move. Turn on the lip gloss tube to make the bubbles light up.

The back of the box gives some scientific background on why mixing oil and food coloring creates the lava effect. Basically, food coloring is water with some pigment mixed in, and oil and water don't mix. So when kids shake the lip gloss tube, they form droplets of color.

Is It Fun?

This is a pretty easy experiment that results in lip gloss that kids can actually use. And while they're making the lip gloss, they're learning a little bit of science. The Project MC2 TV show is all about engaging girls in STEAM learning (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), and this doll and experiment kit is a creative way to cover the science portion of that acronym.

Plus, there's the doll that kids will like playing with to recreate favorite scenes from the show or imagine all-new scientific adventures.

Who It’s For
Project MC2 McKeyla's Lava Lip Gloss is for ages 6 and up with adult supervision. It's going to be fun for kids who like watching Project MC2, playing with fashion dolls, and making their own accessories and makeup.
What To Be Aware Of

The kit comes with a doll, a light-up lip gloss tube, a pipette, and a comb. You'll need to provide oil and food coloring.

The instructions recommend using castor oil and safflower oil as the two oils in the lip gloss, but we used canola oil and vegetable oil because they were more readily available in our pantry.

The light-up lip gloss tube comes with non-replaceable batteries.
