EDITOR'S REVIEW
OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

The Skylanders games have always introduced players to imaginative, awesome, and funny characters. Now it's the player's turn to create their own Skylanders. Skylanders Imaginators Starter Pack, from Activision, is the brand new for 2016, Skylanders video game. The Crash Bandicoot edition Starter Pack comes with the game itself, a Portal of Power, the four new Skylanders figures of Crash Bandicoot, Dr. Neo Cortex, Golden Queen, and Master King Pen. The starter pack also comes with a Creation Crystal, which is what makes Imaginators stand out from past games. Creation Crystals allow players to create their own in-game Skylanders characters. Placing a Creation Crystal on the portal, opens the creator area, and presents the battle class selector menu for your character. From there, you move onto the customizing area, that offers countless options for creating truly customized Skylanders characters. The main menu includes Look, Powers, and Personality. Within each menu are additional sub menus that let you select everything from the character's color scheme to tail width to voice and catch phrase. Once your character is created, it is saved to the Creation Crystal and becomes a playable character in the game, just like the Skylanders figure toys.

The game play itself is classic Skylanders with some nice updates and tweaks that make for a great game. Familiar Skylanders characters, like Spyro and Stealth Elf, are in the game as the guide characters to advise players on where to go and what to do. The game's story takes players through mission-based levels, and bonus levels, with battle and puzzle solving elements throughout. Like previous games, players find and collect coins and loot in the levels. You'll also find Imaginite in the levels, which unlocks items in the game's creation area. The more you find, the more customizing options you'll unlock.

Is It Fun?

Imaginators is my favorite Skylanders game to date. The game play is engrossing, and the graphics are top notch. The ability to create and play as your own character is what really puts this Skylanders in a class all its own. I can see Skylanders fans of all ages, spending hours creating their own characters, which also brings me to my only complaint of the game--I wish the starter pack came with more Creation Crystals. Fortunately, they're available to buy separately, and typically costs less than new figures.

Who It’s For
The game is rated E10+, and has four difficulty levels that range from Beginner, and go up to Nightmare, which is for advanced players, and has to be unlocked before it can be played.
What To Be Aware Of
Finding Imaginite in the game is easy, so it's a good idea to play through a level before creating a character because you'll have more custom items to use.

Imaginators works with old figures, including Swap Force characters. We used the Crash Bandicoot edition Starter Pack for this review. There is also a basic Starter Pack that has all the same items, except Crash and Dr. Neo Cortex.
