Bring the original lovable Star Wars droid to life with the Star Wars Smart R2-D2. This is a programmable and interactive toy droid that will respond to your voice, your hand movements, and your favorite music. Plus, you can use a free app to control R2-D2's movements and actions.
Without the app, there are three modes of play, and you turn the knob on the front of the droid to switch between the modes. In Stationary Hang-Out Mode, talking, playing music, clapping, and waving your hand in front of R2-D2 elicits different movement and sounds. You can also press the knob button on the front of the droid to watch R2-D2 dance to his own music (a very droid-y version of “Cantina Band” from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope).
In the second mode, Mobile Hang-Out Mode, R2-D2 will talk and roam around. The droid will also still respond to sound and hand motions.
And in Guard Mode, place R2-D2 in a quiet location. If the droid detects sound or movement, its alarm will go off.
When you download the free iOS and Android Smart R2-D2 app, you can do even more with the droid using your smart device's Bluetooth connection. Use the app's remote control to send R2-D2 moving forward, backward, left, and right. You can even make the droid turn its head and make different emotive sounds.
From the app's gallery, pick a holographic image of a favorite Star Wars character, and R2-D2 will react to hearing the character's voice or hearing a sound effect played to represent that character.
You can also program the droid to do a variety of different movements and sound effects through the Programming section of the app. The Missions section offers programming tutorials to help you understand how to make R2-D2 do different things, and as you complete each mission/tutorial, you'll unlock more effects and even uncover the Death Star plans.
The toy droid requires four AA batteries, which are not included.
The instructions indicate that there are marks around the knob so you know which mode you're switching to when you turn the knob. But there are no such marks. It took us a few tries to figure out how to switch to Mobile Hang-Out mode because we kept missing it when switching from the first and third modes.
