Escape the Room: Secret of Dr. Gravely's Retreat Review (ThinkFun)

Escape the Room: Secret of Dr. Gravely's Retreat
What It Is

Get your friends together to solve a mystery with the Escape the Room: Secret of Dr. Gravely's Retreat. This game is based on popular escape room experiences where players are locked in a room for a set amount of time and must find clues and hidden objects to ultimately escape the room. This game plays the same way except you're not actually locking anyone in a room.

The game is a sequel to ThinkFun's Stargazer's Manor game, and it has a more challenging and spookier storyline for advanced players. Because this is a group party game, you'll need between three and eight players. Once all players have assembled and the game host reads aloud the scene card 1: arrival, start the timer. If you have three to five players, give yourself two hours. For six to eight players, set it for 1.5 hours.

There are four sealed envelopes with mysterious secret items inside. You won't be able to open the envelopes until you work together as a team to uncover clues and solve codes. Solving codes requires the use of the solution wheel. You simply rotate the four colored rings to line up four solution symbols with the white symbol from the envelope puzzle you're trying to solve. If you guess a correct solution, you'll see the envelope symbol appear through two windows in the middle of the solution wheel. That means you can then move on in the game. Or perhaps escape the room. But can you do it before time runs out?

Is It Fun?
Escape room experiences are all about teamwork and problem-solving skills, and you'll need a lot of both when you play this at-home version. If you're looking for a way to add some suspense to your next game night or if you and your friends are really into murder mystery dinner parties, then this game is a fun combination of beat-the-clock puzzle-solving and roleplay. Depending on who you're playing with, your group can get as into this as you want, even going so far as to dress the part of the characters and listen to period-appropriate music while playing. Will there be times when you incorrectly solve a code? Yes. Will that be frustrating? Yes. But if you're into solving puzzles like this and you have the patience to do it, then this game will make a fun addition to your next game night.
Who It’s For
