OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

Speed off the race track and into the sky with the Hot Wheels Sky Shock R/C from Mattel. As long as you have plenty or space, such as wide-open field or a park, it's super-cute and fun to play with. As an R/C toy for younger kids (Sky Shock is designed for kids over 8), we like that Mattel took the time to design a large, simple remote. The features aren't so different from competitors, but smaller hands will have an easier time. With the flip of a switch, the wings retract or extend so you can choose whether you're sticking to the ground or taking flight.

Is It Fun?

While it's easy to change from car to plane and the remote is well-designed, the downside is that the Sky Shock isn't so easy to control. It's lightweight and made of mostly Styrofoam, so even the slightest breeze will throw it off course. It also really does take a a lot of room to take off. We usually first test these R/C toys inside, but we needed a lot more space to get it airborne and flying decently. Still, we think the toy is cute and if you have enough room, the average 8 year old will love it.

Who It’s For

The Hot Wheels Sky Shock is recommended for ages 8 and up. They'll enjoy the remote's ease of use and the cool design of the two-in-one R/C. They might have trouble flying it, so it's best to have adult supervision to help with their steering. On land, the R/C is a bit more stable. Overall, it's a decent R/C that will suit the needs of hot Wheels fans and R/C fans alike.

What To Be Aware Of

Due to the extremely lightweight design, kids should take this R/C out during calm weather. With a simple push of a button, the Hot Wheels Sky Shock transforms from R/C race car to flying plane almost instantly. The Sky Shock is powered by an onboard rechargeable battery, but you'll need six AAs for the remote. The Hot Wheels Sky Shock is available in two different designs: Iconic Race and Hot Rod Flames. Each is sold separately.
