OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

In the single-player game Clue Master, kids must use deductive reasoning skills to help Tippy the dog return to his doghouse. This Sudoku-like game uses symbols instead of numbers, and players must place bones, balls, and bowls in the correct order in a 3x3 grid to send Tippy home. The game comes with a booklet with instructions, 40 game challenges with solutions, and a magnetic game grid; and nine magnetic tokens (dog bowl, tennis ball, and bones in red, blue, and green). The challenges range in difficulty from beginner to expert, and you'll probably want to start with the beginner challenges first.

Pick your challenge and study the clues to determine where all the tokens should go within the grid. Sometimes you're given the placement of a specific token shape and color, sometimes you'll only know the shape, and sometimes you'll only know the color. It gets even more challenging when you're only given parts of a grid, and you have to determine where those parts go within the larger grid. And after you get through the first 20 challenges, negative clues (or patterns that must not appear anywhere on the completed grid) come into play.

Is It Fun?
While solving these challenges will be fun for anyone who likes solving Sudoku puzzles, Clue Master is really geared more toward kids and helping them develop the skill of deductive reasoning through playing a fun game. Deductive reasoning is a key element of math, science, computer programming, and many other fields, so it's a good skill to have. It might be challenging to solve these puzzles at first, but it's a fun challenge, and you really get a sense of satisfaction once you've successfully completed a puzzle. Clue Master will be fun to play at home but because it's basically a self-contained game, you can also play it on the go.
Who It’s For
Clue Master is for ages 8 and up. It's going to be fun for just about anyone who likes the challenge of solving Sudoku puzzles, but it's particularly designed to help kids develop deductive reasoning skills. The storyline with the dog will be particularly appealing to younger players.
