Mighty Makers Director's Cut Building Set Review (K'NEX)

Mighty Makers Director's Cut Building Set
What It Is

Kids can help Mighty Maker Lily make a movie with the Mighty Makers Director's Cut Building Set. The set includes figures of Lily and her Dalmatian Zoom, plus 308 pieces for building a movie set with stunt accessories for the dog and then re-building into a movie theater. You can even build a phone stand to film your own movies on your smart device and attach your device to the movie theater model to play your movie back.

Kids can also rebuild the pieces into four alternate models, such as a dog course, a director's chair, and a camera rig with or without a smart device. (Instructions for those builds are only available online.) The camera rig models are based on actual filming tools and will work just like the real things, too. Kids can read the information on the Mighty Makers card to learn how to make the camera rig move for different filming techniques and what those techniques are called.

Is It Fun?

This construction set will engage kids in lots of creative storytelling and movie-making. Kids who like building construction toys and who have an interest in how movies are made will like building and playing with this set.

The Mighty Makers line is all about getting girls interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and the building play in this set sort of gets kids thinking like engineers, but it's learning about cinematography that adds “art” to the play and makes this more of a STEAM construction set.

Who It’s For
The Mighty Makers Director's Cut Building Set is for ages 7 and up, and will appeal to kids who like construction toys and making their own movies.
What To Be Aware Of

It took us 30 minutes to build the movie set model, and the instructions were easy to follow. However, some of the pieces were difficult to put together.

Instructions for the phone stand are only available online at knex.com/instructions. Kids will also find instructions there for re-building some of the set's pieces into a camera rig, director's chair, and dog course.

To build the movie theater, you'll need to take apart the phone stand and the dog jump accessory.

Kids can go online to knex.com/downloadables to customize a theater marquee for their movie theater.

A phone is not included. This building set is compatible with smart devices up to three inches wide, six inches tall, and 0.3 inches deep.
