OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

The Hot Wheels Extreme Thrill Coaster from Step2 is an outdoor ride for kids--a Hot Wheels set that kids can really ride in. The set features a 30-inch tall platform and 14 feet of track. Set up takes about an hour, and you're ready to ride.

Push the car up to the top of the platform, then hop in. Push off and go sailing. The track even has a little dip in the center for an extra thrill on the ride. The car stays in the tracks as it goes down. After each ride, push the car back up to the top by walking up the steps in the center of the track, and you're ready to go again.

Is It Fun?

Kids love riding on coasters, but even the most gentle ones can be a little intimidating for the youngest kids. The scale, speed and length of this ride offer the ideal level of excitement for kids. They get the fun but none of the fear. It's easy to use and relatively low to the ground, but it may be as tall as some of the kids themselves, so it will seem really big and exciting. The idea of being a little scared and excited by the ride is a big plus. You have to consider "extreme" as a little bit of romance with the license, though it might seem that way for the first few rides for some kids.

This is great for solo play or for having a group of kids in a backyard setting, too.

Who It’s For

The coaster is intended for kids ages 3 years and up. It will appeal to more adventurous kids initially, but especially when played with other kids, even shyer ones may want a turn and discover it's a lot of fun.

What To Be Aware Of

The coaster is designed for outside use only.

The coaster has a maximum weight of 75 pounds. Many kids will probably get too tall to ride it before they hit the weight limit.

Adult assembly is required, and it took us about an hour. Pay particular attention to the details of instruction. Take time to carefully place the decals.

Be sure to position the coaster on an open patch of grass, and be aware that the car will roll a few feet after it comes off the end of the track. (One reason why grass is preferable to slow it down.)

Adult supervision and protective gear are recommended when kids are riding the coaster.
