Super Mario Maker Review (Nintendo)

Super Mario Maker
What It Is

Super Mario Maker from Nintendo allows players to create their own Super Mario Bros. levels, which the game calls, Courses. From designing and laying out the course's terrain, to placing enemies and hidden power-ups, it's all in the game.

The game utilizes the Wii U GamePad and all the design items are found in an easy-to-use menu. Just tap an item, then tap where to put it. Enemies and items can also be edited for additional personalization options. Mario is on the screen at all times and acts as a placeholder in the creation mode. At any time during the creation mode, a player can check if an element, enemy, or object works by tapping "play". Once tapped, the game starts from wherever Mario is located on the screen. Hit edit to return to the creation mode. In addition to adding elements to a course, there are also sets available, including the Underwater set, that change the theme of the world the course is in.

Completed courses can be uploaded for other players to try and rate. In order to upload a course, the creator must play it through from start to finish.

Is It Fun?

Creating and building Super Mario Bros. courses is a blast, and players are going to love watching friends and family play through their completed courses.

Uploading a course to see what other people think of it is exciting and provides a glimpse into what it must be like to be an actual game-maker.

Who It’s For

Mario Maker is rated E for everyone, and kids as young as 6 should have no problems creating their own levels. Teens, adults, and anyone who has ever wanted to make their own video game will also like it.

What To Be Aware Of

The game starts off with a limited number of course elements and theme sets. New elements are delivered daily, however, to get them, a player must spend at least five minutes the previous day creating a course.

Amiibo figures have the ability to unlock exclusive items in the game. For example, the Super Smash Bros., Link figure, will unlock a Link outfit that can be hidden in a Question Mark box within a course.

Super Mario Maker is currently a Wii U exclusive.
