Barbie Dreamhouse Review (Mattel)

Barbie Dreamhouse
What It Is

The Barbie Dreamhouse is a completely redesigned three-story house for Barbie, complete with elevator, kitchen, and bathroom, and plenty of interactive features and moving parts. It has seven rooms on three floors, a working elevator, a garage, and a pool. It also comes with more than 70 accessories to enhance imaginative play, but no dolls are included. The finished dollhouse is about three feet wide by four feet tall.

The sound unit in the house can be moved around to activate the toilet, water, the fan, the fish tank, and the frying pan. The garage door opens easily, and for 2015, one of the most popular features of the Dreamhouse has been redesigned. The new elevator works on a simple up-and-down ratchet system that lets it glide easily between floors.

This Dreamhouse also has a feature that allows kids to place a smartphone or iPod touch into a case to play videos and make it seem like Barbie and her friends are watching TV or movies.

Probably the most critical and important new feature of the Dreamhouse, however, is the assembly. A new system with pieces that unfold and snap together, as well as super clear directions make putting this together easy and pleasurable--not something that has always been true of earlier versions of this product.

Is It Fun?

The Barbie Dreamhouse is one of the most iconic dollhouses ever created, and the new one builds on that heritage with lots of improvements. The additional accessories add levels of realism to the play. The open design is easy for one or more kids to play together and move the dolls around as they engage in open-ended, narrative-based play.

The styling is contemporary and attractive. You have to like pink a lot, but Barbie's legions of fans do.

Who It’s For

The Barbie Dreamhouse is for Barbie lovers ages 3 and up.

What To Be Aware Of

Assembly took about an hour, including taking time to apply the stickers very carefully. The new design and very clear instructions make assembly easier than ever and frustration-free. However, you'll still want to take your time and read them carefully. If you feel like you have to force a piece into place, check the instructions; the pieces do snap together easily.

If you've put together one of these before, you may want to send a thank you note to the design engineers.

It's probably a good idea to assemble the Dreamhouse where it will be played with. While it's very stable when assembled, it takes two people to move it.

All dolls are sold separately.

Three AAA batteries are required for the sound features, but the batteries are not included.
