amiibo is a collection of interactive figures based on Nintendo characters. The figures have the ability to communicate with multiple specially designed games by touching them to the Wii U GamePad controller. The figures will unlock content in the games, including the characters themselves, which can be leveled up. All of a character's game stats and level information will be stored on the figure and can be played in a friend's game.
Nintendo will begin selling the first amiibo figures this holiday season alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Additional games that will support amiibo figures are Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Yoshi's Woolly World.
The figures are highly detailed and nearly perfect renderings of their digital characters. This allows Nintendo fans to bring the digital characters into the real world for cool-looking displays, and because the figures interact with the games, they are more than just collectibles.
amiibo Mario is for ages 6 and up.
The figures interact with Wii U games by tapping them to the Wii U GamePad controller, so there is no additional accessory to buy or attach to the console.
The figures only work in Nintendo games with amiibo functionality. Those games will have the amiibo logo on the game case.
amiibo figures are being released in waves with the first two arriving in 2014 and more planned for later.
Your amiibo game character data will be stored on the figure and can be played on a friend's Wii U game as well.
