Get Water is an app that lets kids play a game for social good. The game behind this app helps kids understand issues related to water scarcity. The app follows the story of Maya, a girl who loves going to school, but has to collect water instead. Kids must help Maya fill her jug with water, completing each of the different challenges while avoiding dirty waterdrops, peacocks, turtles, and monkeys. As kids play, they unlock new skills and supplies to help them as they progress through each water run. Kids can also read facts about water and its usage and learn about Charity: Water, a non-profit organization that brings clean and safe drinking water to people in need.
This app offers some fun video game-style play while introducing awareness of the global water crisis and encouraging kids to do something about it. Whether or not that message will really stick with kids depends on the kid. The game is challenging-those darn turtles and monkeys keep getting in the way. But kids will want to continue playing to meet each run's challenges and fill the jug completely with water.
This app is for ages 6-9. There is a section for downloading more Fingerprint apps, and in order to access the App Store, a parent is asked to type a three-digit code, which is provided. Kids in this age range would probably be able to type in the code themselves.
Get Water is available on iOS and Android devices.
