Board Games Bring the Fun!

Board games are time-tested fun. There's no social experience quite like playing a board game. You can get families playing together or turn strangers into friends in a matter of moments.

Board games have a history that goes back centuries. Pretty much every civilized culture has had some form of a board game. And whether you want to have a serious strategy game or just a fast-paced game of chance, there are games for all of that. For little kids, like preschoolers, games can play an important role in their development. They'll learn things like taking turns, being a good winner - or loser - and how to interact with other kids.

While there will always be some differences, some of the best games are easy to learn, fun to play, and inspire people to want to play again - or share them with other people. That's certainly been the secret of the success around such favorite games like Trivial Pursuit and Pictionary.

Here are some of the different types of board games that you'll find.

Chase Games: These are games where players follow a path toward a goal. Usually, there's a lot of chance involved. These games include Candy Land, Trouble, Parcheesi, Chutes and Ladders and many others. These are especially good for little kids because they're somewhat simpler than other games and are usually pretty fast playing.

Word Games: Everyone knows Scrabble, Boggle, Bananagrams and others. There are a lot of new games in recent years that take these to the next level. You might call games like Taboo or Catchprhase word games because the play is all about communicating and using language. This category could also include games like Apples to Apples or (for adults) Cards Against Humanity. Again, you're dealing with language rather than individual words, and the winners are decided by other players instead of by chance or strategy, but we think this category is big enough to encompass those.

Strategy Games: These are games like Othello, Chess, Checkers, Stratego and more where being able to plan and think ahead several moves is as important as luck. You could probably even include Clue and Monopoly in this category because you have to plot out your moves in order to defeat your opponents.

Skill and Action Games:These are back in a big way! The first wave of these was in the 1960s when off-the-wall inventors like Marvin Glass created games like Mousetrap. There are tons of games from that era still being made: Kerplunk, Boobytrap, Jenga, for example. But we've also seen a lot of new ones such as Pie Face, Wet Head, Pull My Finger, Break Free, Speak Out and the list goes on. These games are sometimes also called Suspense Games because they all incorporate different kinds of mechanisms that will end up creating a (controllable) mess. You might get hit in the face with a pie. All the marbles might fall. You keep trying to talk with your mouth bent out of shape. These are for players of all ages, and while there are some made specifically for younger kids - like the great games from Wonder Forge - the nice thing about these is that people of all ages can enjoy playing these together. It's all about having a good laugh.

Of course, there are many other kinds of games that we haven't included here such as card games, or more physical games. You can explore TTPM to find more of those, too. But, if you're looking to have a great evening's entertainment that gets people together and laughing, then you really should consider introducing a great game into the mix. Scroll back up to see some of the great games, and come back often because we're playing every day... and getting new games every day!
