More about the Cars Characters and Why Kids Love Them

The world of Disney/Pixar's Cars has been inspiring play for longer than some of its fans have been alive. From a business standpoint, Cars has been one of the top-selling preschool toy brands ever since they first came out.

It's easy to see why kids fell in love with Lighting McQueen, Mater, Doc Hudson, Luigi, Ramone, Sarge and many more. These characters became so popular with kids, and they've loved all different types of play from die-cast cars, to large playsets, puzzles, books, games and much more.

So what makes these characters so popular? Kids—and lots of adults—can relate to the classic themes of the stories such as the little guy proving that he can play with the big kids and the one-time champion trying to prove he's still got the stuff to keep winning. These are classic themes in lots of literature and entertainment, so translated into such accessible and appealing characters it's a winning formula.

That's why these characters work so well in play. Kids can really relate to them and that inspires their imaginations to create new stories of their own devising, taking off the narrative that they see in the movies.

This is probably a good place to talk a bit about the value of narrative play for kids. It doesn't have to be inspired by Cars, per se. Narrative play helps reinforce language skills, encourages social interaction and the development of shared narrative, helps provide intellectual structure and logic and much more. One of the reasons that movies and other pre-made narratives can be so beneficial to kids' play is that each of these worlds has its own rules in which kids need to operate. For example, the cars can't fly, so if they do, an imaginative accommodation has to be made. The internal logic of the world of Cars is important because kids learn to work within the parameters of that world. Believe it or not, this is a great foundation for mathematical thinking and even writing and music, which have their own rules and structures.

But we'll leave the academics for another day. There's a new movie taking audiences on new adventures, introducing new characters and telling a classic tale in a new way.

The wonderful storylines foster engaging, immersive play. And we've even seen adults (and Disney fans) get into collecting the cars. So, Cars has done what only a handful of entertainment franchises have done, it's proven its enduring power with something for every one of its fans, and if everyone is having a good time, then everyone ends up in the winner's circle.
