Finding the Best Pet Gear
For today's families, dogs and cats are no longer considered just "pets". They are treated as members of the family by most pet parents who seek out top quality gear for them. At TTPM Pets, Pet Gear is a general term we use for any pet products we review that are not "toys" including Leashes, Collars & Harnesses, Outerwear, Apparel, Bedding & Furniture, Eating Vessels, Pet Tech, Carriers, and more.
Some pet parents let their furry kids use the human furniture but many prefer to offer their dogs and cats bedding of their own. Even if it's not for the overnight hours, a pet bed can provide a private place for them to feel secure when everyday life becomes hectic. There are more dog bed and cat bed choices on the market than ever before. Design inspirations include comfort, durability, being washable, being anti-bacterial and support, especially for older dogs suffering from arthritis or other leg and joint disorders. When it comes to furniture, this is an area that is largely cat related. New designs that include not just comfy nooks for kitty to get away from it all but also have activity elements added like scratching posts, swatting toys and different levels to climb. Manufacturers of Pet Beds and Furniture are also making products better suited for different sized living spaces and incorporating colors and materials that blend well with human living spaces.
Leashes, Collars and Harnesses, especially for dogs, have evolved in recent years because dog moms and dads are including their pooches in many activities including hiking, running, boating, and socializing in public places. That's not to say that traditional collars and leashes aren't useful anymore, they are. But there are better options for active people and pets. For example, there are leashes that offer a hands-free option or have multiple configurations for different types of activities, harnesses that can be used for heavy-duty excursions, like those worn by guide dogs or service dogs. Some also can be easily put on for pet parents that might have hand strength issues. Additionally, many leashes and collars have built-in safety features, including reflective material and LED lighting for night-time walks. Despite the fact the leash and harness categories are predominately used by our canine kids, there are leashes and harnesses available for cats as well.
Apparel for Pets is a big business, thanks largely to social media. Proud Pet Parents love nothing more than taking pictures of their dogs and cats in cute outfits and share the images on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. One might think this is a seasonal occurrence around Halloween, dress-up for dogs and cats happens for any holiday or occasion. We're not talking just costumes either. There is a wide variety of fashion forward apparel mostly for dogs, but some is designed for cats. As for outwear, there are many breeds of dogs that are not genetically suited for cold, wet weather, and that also includes the large population of mixed breeds. Having a protective layer of warmth is vital, especially if you intend to have your pooch outside in foul weather for extended periods of time. There are many different types of coats and jackets available primarily for dogs. Advances in design of outwear include waterproof fabric, fleece linings for added warmth, tailored fitment, and reflective elements like piping, stitching, and screen-printed patterns.
As for eating vessels, even the simple bowl has evolved. There are designer bowls offered to fit in with any decor with enhancements like rubber bottoms so the bowl will not slide as the dog or cat eats. There are also elevated eating platforms for older dogs with neck and back issues and bowls for cats to prevent whisker fatigue. New advances seem to help solve the problems of working pet parents like bowls that keep the food fresh and drinking fountains to keep the water from getting stagnant. For active pets and their parents, there are a myriad of travel food bowls and water dishes for any activity that requires travel.
Technology plays an ever-growing role in pet gear products. Recently, GPS tracking devices have arrived on the scene for loss prevention purposes. Video cameras that let you speak to your dog or cat from a remote location are promoted as helping pet parents combat pet separation anxiety. Some even have a two-way video monitor and will distribute treats. And given the popularity of activity trackers for humans, why wouldn't they be developed for dogs? Pet Parents want to be sure their dogs maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle, so tracking their activity with Fitbit-like devices is becoming more popular.
Finally, today more than ever, pet parents want to do everything with their pets, including travel. Recently there have been upgrades in design and additional safety measures added to car carriers and Pet Carriers for airplanes are now made to precise airline specifications. Some carriers can double as a bed so your kitty or pup feels comfortable traveling in a familiar space. Others have spots for seatbelt restraints to hold them securely. Fashion is not taking a back seat either especially when it comes to toy and teacup size dogs and cats. There are carriers that resemble designer human bags and luggage.
