How to Shop for the Right Play Yard

Whether you're travelling or hanging out at home, it's always important to have an easily accessible place for your little one to play or rest comfortably... and provide peace of mind for busy parents because the baby is in a controlled and secure environment. Play yards not only provide a kid-friendly space, they can also include many features to help make life with a new baby even easier. To help you figure out what style will best suit your lifestyle, there are a few things to take into consideration.

How will you use it?

If you have a newborn, you might want to have a fully equipped, deluxe play yard that will provide you with all of the conveniences of the nursery. This is a great option for travelling with your new child or to everything at hand's reach in another room of your home.

If you're looking for something simple for travel, a basic crib style might be more of what you're looking for. Their light and easy to tote design makes it great for travelling and they often come with a handy carrying case with handles. Look for ones that don't require an advanced engineering degree to fold up and pack.

When children are small, they don't need a tremendous amount of space, so you may be able to get by with just a travel play yard, if you tend to be on the move a lot. You'll also want to consider the amount of space in your home that you want to devote to the play yard.

Where will you use it?

If you're looking for something that can be easily moved from one room to another, a smaller, light weight, play yard with wheels can be very beneficial. For something that you intend to be a stationary baby center, a larger play yard is probably called for, which means you can also add additional accessories to expand its functionality. If the play yard is stationary and will be used for nap times as well, you may want to choose play yards with a mat and cover so baby will be more comfortable.

Great as the portable play yards are, some families who spend a lot of time in another place, such as a grandparent's home, find it's easy to buy a second one to leave there, along with some basic supplies, to make the back-and-forth trips easier.

Which features are best for you?

Play yards aren't only functional, they can help to make life easy. What many new moms and dads don't realize is how many options and extras you can add. Here are some popular features to consider before you buy a play yard and how they can help:

- Detachable bassinet for newborns, this is also a great option as opposed to buying a separate one and it may be both more economical and be one less large piece to make room for in your home.

- Detachable changing table that can be used until they've reached a certain weight. This can be a great convenience for caregivers at changing time.

- If you're using a travel play yard, some come with cases that offer extra storage for baby supplies like diapers, wipes, burp cloths and clothes.

- Attachable canopies for shading your baby from sun or other bright lights is a great addition for outdoor use.

- Mobiles and interchangeable toys can help keep a variety of entertaining options to keep baby happy and engaged.

- If the play yard is also used for nap times, options with music or vibration can be a nice addition that helps to soothe babies and may encourage sleep. There are also connected models with the option to play music from your electronic devices.

- If your little one is starting to crawl, you may want to buy one with a gate. This can help give them freedom when you're ready to let them roam and keeps them safe inside when it's time to relax.

When you need a play yard that meets your standards and your baby's needs, our video reviews have you covered. Don't forget to bookmark this page so as you bundle of joy grows you can easily find their next one quick and easy.
