Find the Best Puzzles, Brainteasers and More.

Jigsaw puzzles have a long history dating back to the 18th Century. This classic pastime enjoyed by all ages began as an educational tool. In 1767, John Spilsbury, a mapmaker pasted maps to boards and then cut them into pieces. They were given to children to assemble as a means of teaching geography.

Two hundred fifty years later, or so, puzzles are still hugely popular and hundreds of thousands of them are sold every year in the United States. They are a great family activity, a proven stress reducer and a gateway for the imagination. For kids, puzzles serve a variety of strong educational purposes, including problem-solving, fine motor skill development, project management, memory, analytical thinking, self-confidence and many more. Educators have documented dozens of educational benefits that come from these inherently simple toys that are really not much more than paper and ink.

Jigsaw puzzles are available in all kinds of different sizes and difficulty levels, including some new forms made possible by advanced production technology. For preschoolers, large, floor-sized puzzles are great for gross motor as well as fine motor skills.

As for images, well, you can pretty much find anything you want. Movies like Star Wars, Disney Classics, Harry Potter, shows like Doctor Who, landscapes and many more.

The puzzle category encompasses much more than jigsaw puzzles. There are the classic wire brainteasers, most often called bar puzzles, that have been around even longer than jigsaw puzzles. Blacksmiths used to make them in the middle ages. In the early 1970s, the Soma Cube was one of the first stacking puzzles to be a big hit, but even that was eclipsed in 1974 when Erno Rubik invented his famous cube. It would be nearly 10 years until Rubik's Cube became an international sensation, but it was one of the fads of the 1980s. Not that ordinary could solve it. The original 3x3 cube had 43 qunitillion possible combinations. Anyone who could solve it was considered a genius.

The success of Rubik's Cube inspired many different types of puzzles, and today there are even apps that help you solve them. Cheating or not? Well, you can decide.

Over the past few years, the Perplexus Mazes have been a fun labyrinth challenge in the skill puzzle category. There's even a Death Star Perplexus for those fans of Star Wars. ThinkFun is a toy company known for great mind challenges while incorporating a little game play. Smart Games and Mindware are two other companies known for their brain teasing puzzles with game play within.

Recently, there has been a lot written about how puzzles can help people's cognitive abilities stay sharp as they age, even ward of Alzheimer's disease. It's comforting to think this, but in reality there is no scientific evidence to demonstrate this. Alzheimer's is a degenerative nerve disease that develops organically and won't be affected by mental activity. Rather, doctors advise taking care of your body through diet and exercise to delay onset of Alzheimer's. However, doctors agree that cognitive stimulation (using your brain) can be pleasurable and downright fun, and that's where puzzles can really be appealing.

Plus, puzzles can be enjoyed by people of different ages together, so they're great for everyone from kids to grandparents.

Whether you're trying to challenge your brain, or looking to spend some time over a period of time, we have something for you on TTPM. Puzzles are a great way to spend time with friends, play by yourself, and keep your brain challenged. Scroll back up to the top and start looking for the one that will keep you thinking!
