Why We Love Word Games

Words are the basis of human communication. We use them every day and delight in jokes, puns clever rhymes and much more. In fact, you probably play with words every day as you talk to people. Word play is a great part of communication.

So, it's no surprise that for at least a couple of centuries, word games have been part of entertainment and play. We always think of classics like Scrabble, Boggle, Hangman and more when we think of word games, but there are many others to choose from, some include puns, or plays on words, and they can be directly competitive with people scoring points, or social games where one player judges the best efforts of the others.

Word games are a great way to celebrate and enhance communication.

For adults, word games can be a great way to show off, of course, but they're also a great way to learn new things and keep your mind active.

The learning part of kids is especially important as they learn new words and learn to use them. Even from the youngest ages, research continually shows that kids who are actively involved in word play enhance their language and literacy skills... all while having a good time. A child's mind soaks up information like a thirsty sponge, and they are often very proud of what they've learned and being able to show that off.

A preschooler will benefit from a letter learning game, while a child at an elementary level will need activities that help them learn to read. By the teen years, they'll be ready to participate in more challenging test of their language and as they grow to an adult, well we all love a good game of Boggle.

Word games help children of all ages develop a varied vocabulary in a very verbal world. That's very important as they grow and communicate and have increased and diverse ways to communicate, whether or not they're playing games.

So, scroll back up and start finding the word games that will challenge, delight and engage you. The game reviews above will help you find the one for you, and come back often because clever wordsmiths are coming up with new ways to play with words every season!
