What It Is
Before he was known as “The Babe,” George Herman Ruth was just a boy who lived in Baltimore and got into a lot of trouble. At the age of seven, his father brought him to Saint Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, and George’s life changed forever. While he didn’t like school or following the rules, he sure loved baseball. With encouragement from a teacher, his talent took flight over the years until one day, the (then) minor league Baltimore Orioles drafted him out of school. He quickly became a local celebrity and earned the nickname “Babe” because he was so young. The rest is history — on to the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. With his money and fame, Babe helped to rebuild his old school after a fire destroyed it. It looks like Yankee Stadium isn’t the only “house that Ruth built”!
Is It Fun?
Author-illustrator Matt Tavares does an outstanding job of telling Ruth’s story in a manner that makes the reader feel as though they are sitting in a ball park. His illustrations paint the picture of the early 1900s, and the book’s larger size is perfect to help tell the tale of Babe’s larger-than-life personality. The Babe is a baseball legend whose story will continue to be told as long as umpires yell “Play Ball!”
Who It’s For
Publisher Candlewick Press recommends this book for ages 5 to 8, but Tavares’ telling of Babe’s younger days is great for any age that can sit and listen to it.
