- Stack Up! from Peaceable Kingdom
- We recommend this product for ages 3 and up
What It Is
Stack Up! is a cooperative building game with one main object but three levels of play. No matter which level you play, all players work together as a team instead of against each other to reach the common goal. This game's object is to stack all 12 blocks before the Stack Smasher reaches the last space on the board and topples the tower.
There are three levels of play with specific rules designed for age and developmental capability. Level 1 is for 3-year-olds. In this level, players take turns spinning the spinner to see what their move will be. If the spinner lands on a color, that player places one block of that color on the block stack in the center of the board. If the spinner lands on Stack Smasher, move the Stack Smasher forward one space. If the spinner lands on Challenge, make a short stack with any two blocks and stack that on top of the block stack in the center of the game board.
Level 2, for 4-year-olds, adds new play pieces: Stack Sticks and challenge cards. Players take turns spinning the spinner, but this time, if the spinner lands on a color, that player uses the wood ends of the two Stack Sticks to lift and place one block on the block stack. And if the spinner lands on challenge, two players must work together to lift and place a block on the block stack using the wood ends of the Stack Sticks while also performing the challenge activity. For example, both players might be asked to make a funny face.
Level 3, for 5-year-olds, plays the same way as Level 2, but players use the foam ends of the Stack Sticks to lift and place blocks on the block stack.
You can also flip over the game board to reveal four colored squares for playing a colorful matching game with 2-year-olds.
The game comes with a spinner, a game board, 12 wooden blocks, a Stack Smasher with stand, two Stack Sticks, and 12 challenge cards. It is for two to six players.
Is It Fun?
This is a game that's easy for kids to play, provided the child is playing the game at the right age or skill level. Because the challenge cards require reading, parents might need to help 4- or 5-year-olds read those cards. We like that the variety of levels allows the game to grow with a child, adding complexity at each age and level. And because the object is the same in each level, kids of different ages and capabilities can play the game at the same time. This is a cute way to help preschoolers with colors, counting, balance, and hand-eye coordination.
Who It’s For
Stack Up! is for ages 3–5. This is a game for younger players especially. Older players tend to be more attracted to games where there is a clear winner and some level of competition to define the play.
