What It Is
Benny Penny bravely enters a mysterious storefront at the edge of town. Once inside, he discovers a world of outlandish happenings such as a toaster with wings and a rubber “band” that plays music. In this picture book, kids can read the words and the pictures, through a literary technique called rebus. In a rebus, words are represented by images, or by an image plus a letter.
Is It Fun?
This clever book evokes all the bygone charm and mystery of a five-and-ten-cent store and is filled with irresistible picture puzzles that will entice kids to read on their own.
Who It’s For
It’s a great pick for beginning readers in kindergarten or first grade. Younger children may not yet have the skills to put sounds and words together, but would enjoy the book with parents, and it’s certainly a great learning tool.
What To Be Aware Of
The plot is a bit weak and is easy to lose track of in the fun of figuring the rebus words.
