What It Is
National Geographic Kids Wild Tales: Look Out, Cub!, written by Peter Bently, is a lift-the-flap board book about lions. The lion cub wants to play, but everyone is too busy, so the cub heads out to explore on his own. The cub decides he wants to see as far as the birds, so he climbs a tree. Unfortunately, he climbs too high and gets stuck. But Mom comes to the rescue and asks her cub to promise not to wander off alone again. The book includes National Geographic animal photography combined with illustrated jungle backgrounds. The flaps in this book are large, making it very easy for small hands to lift them or pull them down. The back of the book has ideas on how parents can further engage kids with the story, such as encouraging kids to make animals noises and asking kids to draw their own picture of a lion.
Is It Fun?
With Look Out, Cub!, kids are actively involved in the reading process as they lift the flaps. Even if kids can't really read yet, they can pretend to as they play with the book—something that is fun and engaging because it generally makes kids feel more grown-up. We like the combination of illustrations and animal photography, giving kids a fun and realistic look at lions.
Who It’s For
