What It Is
Since its release in 1976, Eric Carle's The Grouchy Ladybug has delighted very young readers and listeners. Carle's signature collage illustrations and humorous text tell the story of a tiny anti-hero. The Grouchy Ladybug doesn't say "please" or "thank you", it doesn't like to share, and it goes through the book trying to pick fights with everything it meets (including a whale's fin). In the end, the ladybug meets its match and becomes a nicer and better-behaved bug. This fast-moving story with die-cut pages invites children to explore the concepts of time, size, shape, and manners.
Is It Fun?
If you're a fan of Eric Carle, then you'll love looking through this book at his signature tissue paper collage illustrations. Parents can use this book to talk to their kids about manners and social behavior. With its different-sized die-cut pages, kids are also introduced to the concept of size. We like that there is a clock face at the top of each page to introduce young children to reading an analog clock and telling time (something not even some adults can do in these digital days).
Who It’s For
The Grouchy Ladybug is for ages 4–8.
What To Be Aware Of
The story itself seems to divide Eric Carle fans. Some love the book, while others feel the book's message is too negative and only teaches children to repeat the book's repetitive phrase "Hey you! Want to fight?" It's up to parents to determine if The Grouchy Ladybug is appropriate for the family library. If it's not, there are plenty of other Eric Carle books to choose.
The Grouchy Ladybug is available in both hardcover and paperback.
