What It Is
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is all about the awkwardness of middle school years as told through young Greg Heffley. He’s a typical middle child who gets pushed around by his older brother and is often cast aside due to the needs of a baby brother. Greg’s not one of the cool kids, but he would love to be. In this seventh installment, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel, Greg finds himself scrambling to find a date for the school Valentine’s Dance. After some feeble attempts to secure a date with no luck, he comes up with one of his crazy schemes and ends up on a 3-way date with a girl and his best friend Rowley. Lot’s of laugh-out-loud events transpire that give new meaning to the term “third wheel.”
Is It Fun?
When I first heard about Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I cringed at the name “wimpy” and was reluctant to even consider it. But then, I read the first book because my daughter really wanted to and I couldn’t put it down. Though I still wouldn’t want my kids using “wimpy” as a household word, the language in the text is clean and all of Mr. Kinney’s books are laugh-out-loud funny.
Who It’s For
My rule of thumb is usually to recommend chapter books to the age group of the book’s subject, but in this case, I think eight years is a perfect entry point. Wimpy Kid books are funny, easy to read, and the middle school “issues” are very light.
What To Be Aware Of
The Third Wheel is available in hardcover and e-book, and I expect the paperback version isn’t too far behind.
