What It Is

David L. Hoyt is a syndicated daily puzzle and word game creator whose puzzles and games are featured in more than 750 newspapers, including USA Today, New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, and Los Angeles Times. But you don't have to wait for the paper to come each morning in order to play one of Hoyt's word games thanks to David L. Hoyt's Word Winder. This board game is really two games in one.

The first game is called SideWinder. Before you play, choose 16 game boards and set them up in a 4x4 grid. In this game, the object is to create a continuous word-winding line of your colored Word Winder chips stretching from one edge of the game board to the other, either from side to side or top to bottom. To do this, players take turns spelling a single word on the board by placing their colored chips on the printed letter squares. Words may be spelled in any direction (left to right, right to left, up or down, diagonally, or a combination of these) so long as the square of each letter in the word is touching the square of the word's very next letter. The winner is the first player to create his or her continuous word-winding line of chips.

RaceWinder plays the same way as SideWinder but the game board changes (16 boards in a 2x8 grid or 15 boards in a 3x5 grid, depending on the number of players) and the object is to create a continuous word-winding line of your colored chips from the board's top edge to its bottom edge. Each player's first word must include at least one letter from the very top row of letters. After this first word, each subsequent word must touch at least one letter from your earlier word. The winner is either the first player to create their continuous word-winding line of chips or the first player to block all his or her opponents so they cannot continue creating lines.

Word Winder contains 16 double-sided game boards, three sets of 70 Word Winder chips, three chip holders, and rules. The game is for two to three players individually or four or six players in teams of two or three.

Is It Fun?

Both Word Winder games require players to think and play strategically. You'll need to work on extending your own line of words, while at the same time blocking your opponents' lines. We like that you can place the game boards wherever you want in the grids so that each time you play the letters are in different spots, creating different words.
