What It Is
The Bluetooth Porsche 911 Carrera is designed to work with an iPod, iPad, or iPhone, this is a sleek replica that offers a great R/C driving experience for kids. Once you've purchased the Bluetooth Porsche 911 Carrera and taken it out of the box, go to the Apple App Store and search for "Silverlit Bluetooth". (This is slightly different than the title listed in the instructions with the model we got.) Then download the free app. The Bluetooth connection means you don't have to worry about a wi-fi connection, and you don't need a plug-in dongle like many iOS R/C cars. Simply open the settings on your device, select the Porsche 911 from Bluetooth, and you're ready to go.
Open the app and you'll find you have a lot of choices to customize your ride. The biggest choice is whether you want to drive using gesture or a joystick. In gesture mode, your screen looks like the driver's seat of a Porsche and moving your smart device drives the car. Joystick mode works like a more traditional R/C car. This is really a matter of personal taste, but we found that for learning to control the car, it might be easier to start in joystick mode. As you get more comfortable, move to the gesture mode.
There are some cool additional features, such as the ability to use headlights, turn signals, emergency flashers, and honk the horn. There are also car sound effects as you drive.
Is It Fun?
We had a blast playing with this, and it's a good value for the amount of features, assuming you already have an iOS device, which is, of course, sold separately. The construction is very sturdy, and we banged it up a lot as we were learning to drive it. And it still looks great.
Who It’s For
The Bluetooth Porsche 911 Carrera is for ages 8 and up. We think more than a few grown-ups will want this, too.
What To Be Aware Of
Four AA batteries are included.
This car is decidedly more for indoor play. If you use it outdoors, make sure you're on smooth pavement.
If the car gets too far away, you'll lose the bluetooth connection and have to start it up again. That's very simple, actually, and the screen will turn red when the bluetooth is disconnected.
