What It Is
Pokémon: Black Version 2 and Pokémon: White Version 2 are the latest Pokémon games and continue the story from the original Pokémon: Black and Pokémon: White. The two Version 2 games are the first time that any of the core Pokémon games have been given sequels and they pick up two years after the events of the first games.
Is It Fun?
The core Pokémon games are the games in which you play as a Pokémon trainer and travel around a fictitious region battling against other trainers and wild Pokémon. Each battle gives players the opportunity to level up their Pokémon and add new Pokémon to their collections. Players can view their Pokémon and stats in the game’s Pokédex. As any Pokémon fan will tell you, collecting and leveling up Pokémon is addictive and makes each new Pokémon game so much fun to play.
Speaking of new Pokémon, there are tons of new Pokémon to capture in Pokémon Black and White Version 2, including Eevee, Riolu Arcanine and Mareep. The biggest difference between the Black and White editions, which are essentially the same games, are the new Legendary Pokémon – Black Kyurem and White Kyurem – which both have new, Ice-type signature moves.
Who It’s For
These games are for Pokémon fans of all ages. The games are easy enough for the youngest fans, as young as four, to play but also appeal to Pokémon fans in their teens and even adulthood.
While these are great games for Pokémon fans, they are also perfect games for anyone who has never played a Pokémon game and wants to find out what they are all about. The games start off with tutorials that teach you the basics.
What To Be Aware Of
Both games are for the Nintendo DS family of systems and while they can be played on the 3DS, there is no 3D content. Despite the lack of 3D content in the main campaign, there is also a separate game, Pokémon Dream Radar, which uses the 3DS’ cameras, motion control and augmented-reality features to capture Pokémon. Pokémon captured in Dream Radar can be transferred to Pokémon Black and White Version 2. Dream Radar is a downloadable game that can be purchased from the Nintendo eShop.
While the games feature new towns and characters, there are a lot of areas that appeared in Pokémon Black and White, which might make the game feel a bit repetitive for players of the original games.
There are more than 20 hours of game-play in the main campaign plus various post-game content that should provide for plenty of repeat play opportunities.
