What It Is
There have been a lot of amazing indoor R/C helicopters in the past two years, and you've heard us say it before, but they just keep getting better. Spin Master's Air Hogs R/C Heli Replay is the best yet. It's got a terrific design with incredible detail on the helicopter. Spin Master has even upgraded the charging board and the plugs so connecting this to charge is easier and more stable than ever before. The helicopter comes with an R/C controller that doubles as the charger. Before you play, you'll need to charge up the helicopter, which takes 25 minutes to do, though it might take a little longer the first time you charge it. Once it's charged, place it on a flat surface so that the internal gyroscope can calibrate. When you're ready, use the remote to lift off and fly.
If you really want to get the most out of this toy, you can download the free app that works with most iOS devices and some Android devices. The helicopter comes with the Air Hogs Link that you plug into your mobile device. The app gives you the chance to work with a virtual joystick like the controller or a tilt-operated controller. There are also two modes of play, beginner and advanced, so as your skill grows you can create more stunts. The app also lets you customize the controls for your most comfortable use. You can also record and play back three different flights.
Is It Fun?
We found the flying super easier and the controls better and more responsive than other indoor helicopters. As with all these indoor helicopters, there's a fairly steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy to operate. We banged it up pretty well learning to fly, and we were pleased with how sturdy this toy was, which means kids won't be frustrated. Even if you already have an indoor helicopter, you may want to consider stepping up your game with this one. It's a quantum leap forward in technology and fun.
Who It’s For
The Air Hogs R/C Heli Replay is for ages 12 and up.
What To Be Aware Of
Four AA batteries are required but not included. The Air Hogs Link comes with three button cell batteries.
When using the app, we found that keeping the throttle on the opposite side as the home button on the iPad lessens your chance of accidentally hitting the home button mid-flight and exiting the app, which will cause the helicopter to fall.
The app is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4/4S, iPod touch (4th Gen), and iPads 1, 2, 3. It is also compatible with the following Android devices: HTC Evo 3D, Sensation XL, Desire, and Hero; Samsung Galaxy S2X and Note; and Motorola Razr XT910 and Atrix.
