What It Is
Runway Fashions is based on Ravensburger's Xoomy, a portable device that lets kids create illustrations by tracing images and designs. With Runway Fashions, kids trace design foils, which are clear plastic discs with outlined images of body parts and clothing on them. Choose three design foils—head, torso, and legs—to create a complete look. Each of the design foils has a letter on it. The letters tell you which foils can be combined. For instance, all foils with the letter A can be combined to create different outfits.
Inside the compact case is a light bulb, or zoom lamp, as the company calls it. Open the case and place one of the design foils on top of the zoom lamp mount. Turn on the lamp and close the case. Slide a blank sheet of paper onto the drawing surface, and you'll see that the image is projected onto the paper. You can adjust the lamp to make the image smaller or larger by gripping the lamp's tabs and pulling it up or pushing it down. Use the black felt-tip pen to trace the image. When you are done creating your fashion, color in your design and display it. Everything fits inside the Xoomy case for easy cleanup and storage.
Runway Fashions comes with a drawing case with zoom lamp, one glare shield, 20 design foils, 10 sheets of drawing paper, a black felt-tip pen, and detailed instructions.
Is It Fun?
Essentially, this is a tracing machine. Because kids are tracing, the results are a little more polished than if kids were drawing freehand, so the creative process can be more satisfying for kids. Kids will like how easy it is for them to draw and design their own fashions. The satisfying results make it fun to pretend to be a fashion designer.
Who It’s For
Runway Fashions is for ages 8 and up. It will appeal to kids who have an interest in drawing and fashion.
What To Be Aware Of
Runway Fashions requires four AA batteries, which are not included.
When tracing, don't press too hard on the drawing surface or you may damage or scratch it.
Be careful when using the pen because stains cannot be washed out of textiles.
