What It Is

The Learn Numbers, Learn to Count app has three levels of play all illustrated with pictures of popular Schleich resin animal toys. All exercises are explained by a child's voice so the app can be navigated without reading. The first level requires kids to trace letters with their fingers. While it uses the touchscreen well, the app only recognizes that the tracing finger gets from one point to the next. The second letter is about learning to count. Kids touch animals in sequence to count, but they have to go in a specific order, and if they are too fast, they don't hear the audio counting. In the later parts of this level, the numeral that is the correct answer is often in a different color, so it's a little bit confusing. The third level is a basic workbook exercise for number recognition and basic addition. Again, the correct number is often in a different color, so it sort of end-runs the learning process. On some of the screens, the animal images are very small and it looks like a scrapbook of toy animals.

Is It Fun?

This will engage younger kids who like touching the screen and who are learning basic numbers.

Who It’s For

Learn Numbers, Learn to Count is for ages 4 and up. By age 4, kids should really be starting to use a pencil or crayon to write, so while the finger tracing may reinforce number shapes, it's likely to get boring for kids.

What To Be Aware Of

The app is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), and iPad.

At only $1.99, this is a lot less expensive than many electronic learning toys if you subtract the cost of the iPad in the first place, of course. But we think there are better, more engaging options out there for kids.
