What It Is

The Atari Arcade—Duo Powered is a game console based on the arcade-style look of classic Atari games. The game console works with the iPad and the Atari's Greatest Hits app. Download the app to your iPad and slide the iPad into the Atari Arcade game console. Secure the iPad with the two buttons on the side to make sure the iPad is stable. Use your finger to scroll through the games within the app, such as Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command, and select the one you want to play. Then use the joystick and buttons on the game console to control the action in the classic Atari games. The Atari's Greatest Hits app is designed for one to two players.

Why It’s Fun

The Atari Arcade—Duo Powered will really appeal to fans of classic video games. It's easy to connect the iPad to the game console and start playing. Parents who remember playing these classic games will like being able to share them with their kids. This is a modern way to play Atari games but with a real old-time arcade feel.

Who It’s For

The Atari Arcade—Duo Powered is for ages 4 and up. It will appeal more to older fans of the classic Atari arcade and video games.

What to Be Aware of

Atari Arcade—Duo Powered works with the iPad and iPad2. The iPad is sold separately.

Young kids may find some of the games overly simplistic and visually confusing, given the lack of detail in the images, as in Asteroids, but others like Super Breakout have remained pretty constant in their design over the years.

Even given the simplicity of the games, there's still a learning curve and a bit of time is required to master the games. That part hasn't changed.

The Atari's Greatest Hits app is free to download and comes with the Missile Command game. There are 100 other games to purchase in-app for either 99 cents per game pack (Each pack comes with about four games.) or $9.99 for all 100 games.

The app-based games will also work just using a finger, but it's so much more fun to use the controller.
