What It Is

What It Is

There's a new way to play Angry Birds. As a follow-up to its popular Angry Birds Knock on Wood game, Mattel is adding a new game called Angry Birds On Thin Ice. Much like Knock on Wood, On Thin Ice is a skill-and-action game that has players building structures, launching birds, and trying to destroy the structures. On Thin Ice has several new features, including breakable ice block building pieces, three pigs, and two helmets for the pigs. There is also an "exploding" TNT box. When it falls, it pops open to simulate an explosion like the ones that happen in the app game. In fact, all of these elements will be familiar to fans of the app who have gotten through several levels of Angry Birds. The board game also comes with a slingshot-style catapult launcher, a red bird, a yellow bird, 12 structure pieces, 40 mission cards, and 16 points cards.

One player draws a mission card and builds the structure shown on the card. Another player loads the required Angry Birds onto the launcher and catapults them to knock down structures and pigs and earn points. (You get extra points for pig's helmets.) The first player to 1,000 points wins.

The mission cards have four levels of difficulty, so beginners can start out on the easy level and progress as they go. The more difficult missions are worth more points. The fourth level of difficulty is the freestyle level. Mission cards in the freestyle level show the building blocks, pigs, and bonus pieces that are to be used, but you can set up the pieces however you want.

Angry Birds On Thin Ice is for two to four players.

Why It’s Fun

On Thin Ice, as noted, has elements that are derived from the smartphone app, but it interprets the game in a way that works as a "real world" skill-and-action game. It adds a social, interactive dimension to the electronic game, and it fosters cooperation because kids can work together to build the structures on each turn. The competition and the build-it-knock-it-down action is perfectly positioned for younger kids.

Who It’s For

Angry Birds On Thin Ice is for ages 5 and up.

What to Be Aware of

Once popped open, the TNT box easily folds up.

If you're required to use any of the breakable ice pieces in your structure, make sure these are properly snapped together before you begin building.
