What It Is

What It Is

The original Uncle Milton Ant Farm turns 55 this year, and it's still one of the most intriguing classic toys of all time. Now it gets a whole new look and a new way to play with Ant Farm Revolution. The set comes with the habitat housed in a cylinder that's filled with bright green nutrient gel. The gel was actually developed by NASA for a space shuttle experiment, and it provides all the necessary nutrients and moisture for your ants.

First you must order the ants online. It takes between three and six weeks for the ants to arrive, and when they do, they arrive in a tube. They are Western Harvester ants from the same colony, so they will get along in their new home. Place the tube in the fridge for about 15 minutes, which will lull the ants a bit. Then open the top of the habitat and drop in your sleepy ants. Over a couple of days, the ants will start building and exploring tunnels. In addition to watching the ants work, press the button on the habitat to turn on an LED light, and you'll project giant ant shadows onto your ceiling. The Ant Farm Revolution is break-resistant and escape-proof.

Why It’s Fun

Kids who are fascinated by bugs, especially ants, will think it's cool to watch the ants work in their habitat. The LED light and shadow projector feature adds a silly, but cool aspect to the traditional Ant Farm.

We were really fascinated by being able to see up close how the ants build their tunnels and work in their environment.

Who It’s For

Ant Farm Revolution is for ages 6 and up.

What to Be Aware of

The Ant Farm Revolution takes three AA batteries, which are not included.

Follow the instructions about care of the ants carefully, particularly with respect to temperature and direct sunlight. This will ensure that the ants live as long as possible.

According to Uncle Milton, you can expect the ants to live two months or so.

As the ants die, you can clean out the habitat and order new ants, which will continue the work from the previous colony.
