What It Is

What It Is

For the past 40 years, UNO has been a favorite family card game. Fast-paced and frenzied, this now-classic card game is a race to get rid of all your cards—with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Mattel has introduced a new version of the game called Uno Roboto, which uses a cute, robotic character in the center of the table—and throws twists into the game as you play. Each player records his or her name into the unit before they start the game. You can also create a special "house rule," using one of the suggested ones or one you make up yourself.

The play is like traditional UNO, but at times, the Roboto unit may interrupt you to change up the game with twists such as changing direction of play or interject the house rule. If you don't follow it, you may have to draw more cards—not good since the object of UNO is to be the first out of cards. All of these variations are intended to make the game a little more unpredictable and a little different each time.

UNO Roboto is for two to six players.

Why It’s Fun

On one level, this is a great innovation. The Roboto character is cute, and the house rules and random reverses are fun. The robot adds a fast-paced variation on a classic that might add some spice to family game night.

Who It’s For

UNO Roboto is for ages 7 and up.

What to Be Aware of

The potential downside of the game is that when the Roboto character becomes the center of the game and the electronics become the focus, that takes away some of the interaction between the players. One of the reasons great games are great is that they foster interaction among the players, so the addition of the Roboto character changes that dynamic.

The clear plastic box the game comes in is really cool, but it's not great for storing the game after you open it. You'll want to be sure that after you play the cards and the robot stay together.

UNO Roboto comes with three temporary AA batteries that power the in-package Try-Me feature. Mattel recommends that for best results you replace them.

There is a volume control, which is good because we had to turn it up and get Roboto to repeat himself a couple of times while we were playing in order to understand what we had to do.
