Labor Day weekend is typically a very slow and quiet weekend for the box office with few people going to the movies. I think if Hollywood took a chance and released something big on the unofficial last weekend of Summer, people would go see it but I’m a huge movie-lover so I’d go to the movies any time of the year.
A few studios did take a chance and released new movies over the weekend with two of them landing in the number one and two spots. At the top of the list is The Possession, the second haunted horror flick to arrive in the past few weeks. The Possession took in $17.7 million in it’s opening weekend and roughly $4 million yesterday.
Coming in second was Lawless, which despite starring Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf, only took in $10 million over the weekend. I like Tom Hardy but Shia LaBeouf doesn’t exactly motivate me to get to the theater. Lawless looks like a definite home-rental. The movie stars Hardy with Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Reese Witherspoon, in a fun, action-rom-com.
At the opposite end of the success spectrum, The Dark Night Rises has now earned $433.2 million (domestically) and is set to take the eighth place on the all-time domestic chart by next weekend. Internationally, the movie has grossed more than $1 billion.
