Can You Lose Weight With A Video Game?

Fitness

The first day of March seems like a good day to check in with those New Year’s resolutions. By now a lot of people have started slipping on their resolutions or, as is my case, haven’t bothered starting them at all.

Like a lot of people, I decided 2011 would be a good year to get more active, improve my overall health and shed a few pounds. As difficult as it is to believe that someone who plays video games for a living isn’t intrinsically healthy, active and in good shape, it’s true.  So far this year I haven’t done anything about my resolution but with swim-suit season approaching, I think it’s time to start.

Going to a gym isn’t really an option for me because the closest location is 45 minutes away and I don’t want to spend money for a membership that I probably will never use. So I decided to turn to my new best friend, Kinect, to help me get in shape. I’ll be using the “game” Your Shape: Fitness Evolved by Ubisoft for Xbox Kinect as my workout routine, which I plan to do at least four days a week. Your Shape features workouts created by Men’s Health and Women’s Health magazines and allows users to create personalized workout programs designed to achieve specific goals.

Every Monday, I’ll do a blog post with an update on my progress and weigh-in. At the end of the month, I’ll do a full review of the game and be able to tell you if it works or not.

My starting weight is 191, which at a height of 6’2″, is about 10 pounds overweight. I started my workout program yesterday with an initial 20 minute Your Shape workout. I’m also going to spend the month eating healthy but not dieting. In other words, no pizza or fried foods but whole wheat pasta is ok. I’m also cutting out soda but will have an occasional light beer.

I’ll be doing twitter updates throughout the week and you can check in with me here on the Play Forum every Monday for the weigh-in post. Wish me luck!
