The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug easily took the #1 spot on the box office list with $73.7 million. That’s an impressive figure and ranks as the fourth all-time opening for a movie in December. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as last year’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which set the December record with $84.6 million.

Frozen had another strong weekend and even a new Madea movie wasn’t able to outperform it.  Frozen took the #2 spot on the list with $22.2 million while Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas opened in 3rd with $16 million.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire slid down to 4th while Thor: The Dark World rounded out the Top 5. The Thor sequel has earned a little over $198 million in it’s six weeks at theaters. It will be interesting to see if it crosses the $200 million mark or if the highly anticipated Anchorman 2, which arrives this Wednesday, pushes it out of theaters.
