Disney Creativity Studio comes with a "smart" stylus that interacts with the Disney Creativity Studio app and enables all kinds of Disney-related drawing activities and free drawing. We reviewed an almost-final version of the app and the stylus, and so there are still some refinements and additional features to come. However, for kids interested in drawing and Disney, even not fully complete, this is an impressive toy. The app is free in the App Store, and there's a lot you can do for free just drawing with a finger. But the stylus is really what this is all about and unlocks the magic of drawing like a Disney artist. With the stylus, you get a complete toolbox to create an awesome drawing experience. You can switch between different types of drawing tools: pencils, stamper, marker, and crayon. You can also change line thickness with five different choices. You have a wide variety of colors to choose from, and you can get magical effects when you shake the stylus and, just like a traditional pencil, flip over the stylus to erase. The activities include things such as dot-to-dot pictures, coloring, and tracing, but the piece de resistance of the app and the stylus is the learn-to-draw function. Young artists are guided step-by-step through the drawing of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy just the way the Disney artists do it. There's even a video you can watch that introduces the basic drawing concepts and techniques. We really love this part of the app and it's what makes it truly different. Using the stylus and drawing, you really start to understand the drawing process and can get a feel for drawing. You quickly realize that you don't have to be "perfect." Best of all, it's easy to undo anything so you can just try whatever you want. The technology is fluid and easy to use, and you can email your creations, then print them out. We found the stylus, even in the unfinished version, easy to operate and responsive, though you'll want to spend time familiarizing yourself with it for best results—like any piece of technology.

Then, lock the handle back in, press down on the sprayer's trigger, and start spraying.

Cake pops are super popular in the food world now and no one knows them better than New York Times bestselling cookbook author Bakerella. SRM Entertainment and Bakerella have teamed up to help kids make their own cake pops at home. The Cake Pops by Bakerella Ultimate Cake Pops Set comes with a Cake Pops Crumbler, a Cake Pops Mixing Bowl, a Cake Pops Tray, a Cake Pops Press, Cake Pops Molds, a Cake Pops Dipping Bowl, Cake Pops Sticks, and a Cake Pops Stand. You will need 1/3 of a nine-by-13-inch cake, completely cooled. (Either make your own or buy one, which is what we did.) You will also need 1/3 cup of frosting, a large spoon, one 12-16 ounce bag of candy coating, and sprinkles. These extras are not included with the kit.
Follow the instructions to crumble the cake into a bowl, add frosting, and mix the cake and frosting together until thoroughly combined. Divide the mixture into balls and place them on the Cake Pops Tray. Place the tray in the freezer for 15 minutes. Then trim excess cake mixture by using the Cake Pops Press and one of the Cake Pops Mold shapes. Return the cake pop balls to the freezer for another 15 minutes. Then transfer to the fridge. Melt the candy coating in the Cake Pops Dipping Bowl. Insert sticks into the cake pop, and dip the cake pop straight down into the melted coating. Decorate with sprinkles. Place the cake pops in the stand and let them dry for 10 minutes. Then eat!
The characters from Monster High are starring in their first DVD movie, Monster High Ghouls Rule. The premise of the movie is that for Halloween, the characters have gone into their parents' closets and gotten old-fashioned but high fashion clothes to wear as Halloween costumes. Each outfit pays homage to the girls' monster heritages. The dolls in the line include Frankie Stein in a lightning bolt/Bride of Frankenstein costume, Draculaura in a pink and black dress with large and intricately detailed wings, Clawdeen Wolf in a cheetah-inspired furry catsuit, and Cleo de Nile in lots of teal, black, and gold. The dolls come with Halloween party accessories, hairbrushes, and doll stands. Each doll is sold separately.
The LeapPad Explorer was a huge hit when it came out last year. But this year, LeapFrog has revamped the LeapPad Explorer to give it more memory, better battery life, and more features.
The LeapPad2 Explorer has a sleek new look (in either green or pink) and a growing library of more than 325 games, apps, music, videos, and more that will all be available by year's end. Just like the original LeapPad, it works with all LeapFrog Explorer cartridges and apps and LeapPad learning apps. But unlike the original LeapPad, the new LeapPad2 has two built-in cameras: one in the back so kids can take traditional photos and video and one in the front so kids can take photos and videos of themselves. There is also a built-in microphone. And LeapFrog has doubled the amount of storage in the LeapPad2 to 4 GB and given it a faster processor (550 MHz compared to 393 MHz).
Play on the LeapPad2 is very much the same as using an adult tablet. Touch the five-inch color screen with a finger to bring characters and words to life. Tap, draw, and write with the child-sized stylus or turn, twist, and shake the tablet for motion-based play thanks to the built-in accelerometer. With the Pet Pad app, kids can create and take care of their own pet. The LeapFrog Learning Songs app is a music player with five songs. The Cartoon Director app lets kids create animated cartoons, and the Art Studio app lets kids edit pictures. LeapPad Ultra eBooks are interactive reading experiences written at three reading levels. The stories progress from simple text to more complex words and sentences. LeapPad2 remembers progress from game to game and book to book to keep the content challenging and engaging. Each experience offers multiple levels of play, and games auto-adjust so kids can learn at the right pace.
The LeapPad2 comes with five learning apps. Pet Pad and LeapFrog Learning Songs are built into the device. The other three you'll need to download from www.leapfrog.com/connect. To do this, just go to the website, connect the tablet to your computer using the included USB cable, and follow the on-screen prompts to install the LeapFrog Connect Application. Complete the registration and go to the App Center where the Cartoon Director and Art Studio apps will automatically download. For the fifth app, you can go to the App Center and choose whatever game, eBook, or video you would like.
When using batteries in the LeapPad2, the battery life is about nine hours. But, for parents who don't want to use batteries, there is a LeapPad2 Recharger Pack, sold separately, that replaces the need to use batteries with LeapPad2.
Mattel's Angry Birds games, Knock On Wood and On Thin Ice, have been hot-selling games in the marketplace, and there's a brand new game based on the Angry Birds Space app. The object of the Angry Birds Space Game is to be the first person to reach 1,000 points. To score points, players must knock over pigs and break open the pig's helmet or asteroid for bonus points.
The game comes with Space Mission Cards that tell players how to set up the scene. There are four levels of cards. Level 1 is easy, Level 2 is harder, and Level 3 is the most difficult. The points values go up as the difficulty level does: 100, 200, 300. Level 4 is freestyle, meaning the Mission Cards will show you all the pieces you must use, but you can put them together however you want. The point values for Level 4 differ.
Players take turns choosing Space Mission Cards. Once you've chosen a card, hand it to the next player. That player is going to build what's on the card and you're going to shoot it down. Place the launcher at least one foot away from the front of the structure. Then use the birds listed on the Space Mission Card (in the order shown) to shoot down the structure. Place the bird into the launcher, hold the launcher down with one hand, and pull down on the slingshot with the other hand. Let the slingshot go to send the bird flying. All of the pigs must be knocked over in order to score points. Keep the Space Mission Card to keep track of your score if you knocked down all the pigs. If you're not successful, move the Space Mission Card to a discard pile. Score 100 bonus points for cracking open the space helmet and asteroid.
The Angry Birds Space Game comes with two birds (Ice Bird, Super Red Bird), a breakable asteroid, three pigs, a space helmet, a bird launcher, four large girders, two small girders, two triangles, two large stone girders, two small stone girders, two stone cubes, 32 mission cards, and eight points cards. The game is for two to four players.
