What It Is

Young Max wants to make a delicious birthday cake for his mother whose birthday happens to fall on Passover. But, while he tries to be patient and wait for his father's help, his baby sister keeps getting in the way. Time is ticking, and Max must figure out how to make his mommy's surprise by himself. He finds a very creative way of making a cake out of matzo and homemade frosting all on his own, and without the need for an oven.

Is It Fun?

Author Michelle Edwards does a great job of capturing the bursting excitement of a little boy wanting to surprise his mommy. Max is a typically impatient child and has a wonderful "a-ha!" moment when he realizes that he has the power to do things on his own.

Who It’s For

In addition to being a great read-out story, it is also a simple version of the Passover story that's perfect for preschoolers and up.

What To Be Aware Of

Fun fact: Illustrator Charles Santoso worked on the animation team for the The LEGO Movie.
