What It Is
Stella Batts: Pardon Me is the third book in the Stella Batts chapter book series for newly independent readers. The books, written by Courtney Sheinmel and illustrated by Jennifer A. Bell, follow the adventures of 8-year-old Stella, who loves to write and whose family owns a candy store called Batts Confections.
At the start of Pardon Me, Stella's best friend, Willa, has just moved away, and Stella is afraid that they're not best friends anymore. After all, Willa won't even talk to Stella on the phone. Then, Stella meets Evie, a new girl at school who also doesn't have a best friend. Stella hopes Evie will be her new friend, but she soon finds that making friends, especially best friends, takes time. And keeping best friends, especially when they live far away, takes a little extra effort.
Is It Fun?
Stella's emotions as she deals with different changes in her life (best friend moves away, Dad redesigns the candy store) are very realistic and show that it's okay to feel sad if you're missing your best friend. Change can sometimes be hard, but it can also open up new opportunities. The black-and-white illustrations throughout the book help beginning readers envision the story.
Who It’s For
Stella Batts: Pardon Me is for ages 7 and up.
What To Be Aware Of
There are a few typos in the book, which kids might not notice, but as editors, finding errors in children's books always trouble us.
