What It Is
The Kendama from Sweets Kendamas is a traditional Japanese wooden skill toy. The toy is made up of three pieces: the Ken, which is the middle piece with the tapered spike; the Sarado, which is the double-sided cup piece, and the Tama, which is the ball.
Before you use the toy, follow the guide to assemble the pieces and tether the ball. The directions also include basic visual guides to perform different types of tricks, but we suggest visiting Sweets Kendamas' website for video tutorials for a better understanding. To perform the basic Big Cup trick, for example, you'll start with the ball hanging on the string, toss it up, and just before it goes back down catch it in the larger cup on the Sarado.
Is It Fun?
While this might look like a pretty simple toy at first glance, it's not. The toy was founded on the principles of improving one's focus, determination, and hand-eye coordination so to perform even the most basic tricks requires focus, a steady hand, as well as patience-lots and lots of patience.
Each trick takes time to learn so this skill toy is best suited for those willing to put the time and effort into learning the tricks. Those who enjoy yo-yoing, and similar skill toys, will probably find the most appeal with these toys as well as get a new level of satisfaction in using this toy and constantly learning new ways to play.
