The object of the game Googly Eyes is to draw pictures for your team to guess according to difficulty levels in a specific amount of time and be the first player to cross the finish line. Set up is easy, but be sure to use the stickers on the die so you can play. On each turn, the trick is that when you draw, you have to wear glasses that will distort your vision and make it more challenging to draw. The color of the space you land on determines which lens you use (green for easy, yellow for medium, and blue for hard), and each has a different type and level of visual distortion. Change out the lenses in the glasses to match the color on your turn. There are also spaces where you can choose which to use, draw without the glasses, or draw with the opposite hand than you do normally.
Unfortunately, there's no gentle way to say this, but this is not a very good game. Pictionary demonstrated how fun it can be to draw charades. But for many people that challenge is enough. Adding the Googly Glasses is not an improvement. For one, if you already wear glasses, you have to take them off to play, which is already challenging. Add the distortion, and you instantly amp up the frustration level of the game. For younger kids especially, the distortion of the vision can be upsetting and trigger motion sickness, and older players will just find it frustrating. In fact, we couldn't get through an entire game without feeling annoyed and nauseated. Somehow, the designers really missed the boat on this one. It's fun to figure out what a team member is trying to communicate by drawing, and everyone is in it together. Watching someone struggle both with the drawing challenge and a physical impairment, however, is not. In fact, on some levels it feels unfair if not downright mean. Goliath makes some very good games, but unfortunately, this is not one of them.
Googly Eyes is for ages 7 and up.
Goliath also makes a similar game called Goggle Eyes, sold separately.
