What It Is

Author Leslie Kimmelman gives kids a little-known slice of American history with the picture book Hot Dog! Eleanor Roosevelt Throws a Picnic. In June 1939, the United States hosted British monarchs King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. It was the first time reigning British royalty had visited the U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt wanted to extend a warm welcome and hand of friendship to her guests by throwing an all-American picnic complete with hot dogs. The menu shocked many people, but the royal couple, though surprised, enjoyed their first hot dog experience. The book features wonderful illustrations by Victor Juhasz that really capture the comedy behind this event.
