What It Is

Words are all around us, and kids can discover and find words in the real world using the Big Bird's Words app. Using your device's camera and augmented reality technology, the app recognizes all kinds of printed words in your real-world environment. First, kids help Big Bird find food items to add to the grocery list. Then, kids choose one of those words to find in the real world. When kids focus on a word, they will hear Big Bird recognize and read it. Only 10 food words are part of the seek-and-find play, but the app recognizes more than 500 food words. Plus, the app knows when your child has found thousands of other printed words. When kids spot a word that is not the one they've picked, Big Bird offers cheerful encouragement to keep kids on the hunt. Silly sound effects and Big Bird's word trivia keep kids entertained as they play.

This app can be used in your home with foods in your pantry or fridge and recipes in cookbooks. The app also works with all kinds of food labels at your grocery store. And parents can also have free word labels emailed to them to make it easier to find specific words that you aren't readily available in your home.

Is It Fun?

This app helps kids build their vocabularies and get excited about reading. Kids will love hunting for words along with a favorite Sesame Street character and seeing their real-world environments appear inside and interact with the app. We do wish that the app included more than 10 food words as part of the game, but perhaps additional words will be added in future updates.

Who It’s For

Big Bird's Words is for ages birth–5, but the sweet spot will definitely be kids in the 2–5 range with adult participation for the youngest kids.

What To Be Aware Of

This app is compatible on iOS and Android devices. While you can use this on an iPad or tablet, it is really designed for use on phones. The experience of using the camera in this app is best for young children on phone-sized devices.

For best results with the app, look for words with letters in the same color, in a straight line, and on a flat surface.
