What It Is
Doc McStuffins: Moving with Doc is an app that's all about practicing healthy eating habits and exploring the importance of exercise. Kids can choose which Doc McStuffins character they'd like to play as in the Backyard Games, and then train with that character through five activities: a bubble obstacle course, jumping rope, swinging rings, a food catch game, and stretching with Doc. Once kids have completed the training sessions, they can compete in the Backyard Games, a timed event in which you try to beat your best score by getting through three of the activities. Kids can also keep track of healthy activities they complete outside of the app with the Healthy Me Chart feature, which kids can decorate with digital stickers they earn by completing each activity.
Is It Fun?
Aside from the stretching activity, kids aren't really participating in physical activity as they play with this app. But seeing their favorite characters exercising might encourage kids to exercise outside of the app. The ability to decorate their Healthy Me Chart also offers kids motivation to do healthy activities on their own.
Who It’s For
This app is for ages birth–5, but we think the sweet spot will be kids 2–5.
What To Be Aware Of
The HD version of this app is compatible with the iPad running iOS 6.0 or later. The non-HD version is compatible with the iPhone 4 or later, iPad 3 or later, and iPod Touch 5th generation and is optimized for the iPhone 5.
The Parents section can only be accessed by entering a numbered code, but that code is provided, so kids could easily enter it themselves. Once inside the Parents section, there are links to other Disney apps, and tapping on them takes you to the Apple App Store where, if kids know their parents' Apple password, they could easily finalize a purchase.
